In my opinion, one of the biggest national day holidays is coming up! April 22 is National Earth Day.
National Earth Day celebrates the birthday of the modern environmental movement. It wasn’t until 1962 when writer Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring was published did it raise concerns about the environment, living organisms, and the implications on public health caused by pollution. In 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson had a platform concerned about environmental deterioration and wanted to increase awareness about air and water pollution. After persuading other politicians and activists to hold teachings on April 22, 1970. This idea quickly caught on and caught media attention. People, organizations, colleges, and religious groups were educating and holding rallies and protests to the public about the public health impacts caused by the industrial revolution. This movement gained national unity among many differing communities and politicians and led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and other environmental laws. Today EARTHDAY.ORG works with over 1 billion people every year, giving them resources and opportunities to get involved around the world.
To celebrate National Earth Day this year
Volunteer at a local garden or farm
Plant a tree or flowers
Visit a nature museum
Watch a nature documentary
Not just on National Earth Day should you care about the earth, but every other day even if it is not volunteering for a local garden. But make sure to use reusable water bottles and shopping bags. And ALWAYS remember the three Rs: reduce, reuse, recycle!
Here are some of my favorites pictures to celebrate Earth Day!
